ABOUT THE COMPETITION

Preamble

We believe that Youth Entrepreneurship is the catalyst that will help to address the Caribbean’s major issue of youth unemployment.

This Cut Buddy-inspired initiative provides an opportunity for youth to display their novel product solutions, and to receive feedback, guidance and advice about pitching their ideas and building their confidence.

The Next Big Inventor Competition collaborates with talented business partners in order to help youth create inventions and develop innovative ideas and projects which can eventually turn into successful 'life-hacks'.

In 2019 with the Pilot, we will help to create student entrepreneurs in St. Lucia from the Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School, by providing them with the tools and guidance they need to turn their excellent ideas into powerful 'life-hacks'. COMPETITION TIMELINE

Pilot, 2019

March 4th to the 18th

STAGE 1: SUBMISSION OF ENTRIES

SLUDTERA’s Online Learning Platform called The Entrepreneurship Readiness Program (The ERP) will be used to manage the online component of the competition. Student-preneurs are required to submit their first entries in the form of an introductory video. Student-preneurs have until March 18th 2019 to submit their entries (2 weeks). The submissions will be reviewed between March 19th to the 24th 2019.

April 1st to June 17th

STAGE 2: ASSIGNMENTS

The Online Learning platform used by The ERP is powered by Canvas, created by Instructure. The top performing team with the highest graded assignments will present their life-hacks at the Venture Evaluations (stage 3). They will be notified with the details of the venue between June 24th to the 30th 2019.

July 10th & August 14th

STAGE 3: VENTURE ACCELERATIONS

The Startup Huddle St. Lucia program will be used for this stage of the competition. The finalist teams will participate in a team building workshop/Bootcamp with the Startup Huddle St. Lucia Team. All the finalist team members are required to participate and complete the entire workshop.

On July 10th, each team will have 3 minutes to pitch their projects, followed by a 4 minute Q&A session with the expert panelists followed by a 4 minute Q&A session with the audience. The audience will complete a survey on each team providing much-needed feedback the presentations.

On August 14th, the teams will have another opportunity to present after they have taken into consideration the audience feedback. The audience will select their favorite Team by using ‘Venture dollars’ (similar to monopoly money) and placing them into that team's ballot box. The team with the most 'Venture dollars' will be the winner of the Venture Investors Choice Award.

November 22nd

STAGE 4: FINAL PITCH & AWARDS

In November 2019, all finalist teams will go head to head and have 1 minute to pitch their life hacks to the judges in a ‘Shark Tank’-like setting. All team members will be required to participate.

Finally, these judges will select the winning team.
